Ling Six Sound Test
By: Ling and Ling, 1978
Description
The sounds used in this test are the vowels /a/ as in art, /u/ as in who, and /i/ as in ease, and the consonants /m/ as in me, /S/ as in she and /s/ as in so. These sounds are used because they include low-, mid-, and high-frequency components of speech and ability to hear all six of these sounds implies ability to hear (i.e., detect) all other sounds of speech. The child’s ability to detect and discriminate these phonemes is evaluated in an auditory only, open-set format.
