Advanced Bionics Launches Emotional Patient ‘THE MOMENT’ Campaign

Advanced Bionics illustrates how life with a cochlear implant can help people with hearing loss connect with their loved ones.

VALENCIA, Calif., USA, October 17, 2022 — Advanced Bionics, a global leader in cochlear implant technology, launches an emotional patient ‘connection’ campaign. Following the successful launch of their Naída CI Marvel for adults and Sky CI Marvel for children in 2020, this new campaign is designed to highlight the human truth that our lives are enriched and fulfilled by deep and meaningful connections with those around us, and that sound enables those connections.

‘The MOMENT’ campaign showcases people who hear with Advanced Bionics cochlear implants and their families. This is the first time Advanced Bionics, or any hearing company, has presented real, emotional human stories through the eyes of a loved one. This differentiated approach is designed to underline the power of sound in a visceral way that will inspire people to think deeper about hearing loss and to seek effective treatment options for it, such as through cochlear implants.

The campaign will kick off with three family stories through video in October. Over the next few months, Advanced Bionics will share and promote the stories about seven different individuals with their loved ones, spanning the range of different hearing experiences, including patient demographics, onset and type of hearing loss, as well as technology used.

“As a medical technology company, our day-to-day work is often focused on products and features. But more fundamentally, what drive and inspire all of us at Advanced Bionics are the people who use our cochlear implants, and the transformational difference our products can make in their lives,” said Victoria Carr-Brendel, PhD, president of Advanced Bionics. “‘The MOMENT’ campaign is our homage to these people and their families. Their stories, told through every day, yet profound and extraordinary moments they shared together because of our cochlear implants, are the quintessential reflection of Advanced Bionics’ mission. But even more importantly, we hope that they inspire those with hearing loss to seek effective treatment for it so that they don’t miss any more connection moments with their loved ones.”

“All my life, I was always eager to share my hearing story with those around me. My wife Heather and I were excited to share our experiences dating and becoming parents to three amazing kids,” said David Cluff, who hears with Advanced Bionics cochlear implants and is featured in ‘The MOMENT’ campaign. “Our story is so much more than just ‘I can hear.’ It’s ‘I can hear my kids tell me “I love you!” to “I had a rough day.” Our hearing journey is not perfect, but it is a journey we love to share with everyone.”

Advanced Bionics Receives FDA Approval for Marvel Cochlear Implant Platform and World’s First Sound Processor for Children

Collaboration with Phonak brings breakthrough Marvel hearing technology to adult and pediatric cochlear implant wearers

VALENCIA, Calif., USA, December 10, 2020– Advanced Bionics (AB), a global leader in cochlear implant technology, in collaboration with Phonak, a leading provider of life-changing hearing solutions, receives FDA approval and announces it is bringing Marvel hearing technology to Advanced Bionics cochlear implant wearers.

 This includes:

  • Sky CI™ Marvel, the world’s first dedicated sound processor for children
  • New Naída™ CI Marvel sound processor for adults
  • Sky Link Marvel and Naida Link Marvel super-power hearing aids for bimodal wearers
  • New Target CI fitting software with industry-first features
  • New Advanced Bionics Remote app for easy adjustments via smartphone

Naída CI Marvel offers wearers a powerful hearing experience with effortless comfort and convenience

With its more than 25 years of experience in cochlear implants, Advanced Bionics brings the celebrated Marvel platform to benefit their adult cochlear implant recipients. With AutoSense OS™ 3.0, Naída CI Marvel delivers excellent sound quality and performance in a variety of situations throughout the day. This machine-learning algorithm analyzes the sounds in the listener’s environment every 0.4 seconds and can identify whether they’re in a noisy restaurant, car, concert hall, at home, etc. It then engages the appropriate cochlear implant system features to customize and enhance the wearer’s hearing experience based on the specific characteristics of the listening environment.

With Marvel CI, Advanced Bionics offers the world’s first cochlear implant sound processor to connect to virtually any Bluetooth-enabled device and to support hands-free calling. Naída CI Marvel’s unique ergonomic housing and slim headpiece offer a secure, discreet, and comfortable wearing experience. Together with the AB remote app, which enables convenient and discreet management of the hearing devices, it provides ultimate ease of use.

Sky CI Marvel is the world’s first dedicated sound processor for children

Sky CI Marvel combines proven Advanced Bionics sound processing with the proven Marvel platform from Phonak, a global leader in pediatric hearing care. AutoSense Sky OS™ 3.0 work similarly to the adult version in Naida CI Marvel but is uniquely designed for a child’s typical listening situations, providing excellent sound quality and performance wherever the child goes.

Offering a wide variety of wearing options, child-preferred colors, and waterproof accessories, Sky CI Marvel offers flexibility for a growing child’s adventures, whether at the pool or in school. Its integrated Roger™ technology help kids hear their teachers and conversation partners in classrooms, cafeterias, and auditoriums directly in their ears, bypassing noise in the environment. Plus, direct smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth® and the intuitive AB Remote app help kids stay connected with the world around them throughout their day.

Dynamic Bimodal Hearing with Sky Link Marvel and Naida Link Marvel

Most cochlear implant wearers choose to a have only one cochlear implant despite having severe or profound hearing loss in both ears. The other un-implanted ear requires a super-powered hearing solution that works in harmony with the cochlear implant. This is known as bimodal hearing, and scientific evidence shows that combining a hearing aid with a cochlear implant results in significantly higher speech understanding and sound quality than provided by the cochlear implant or a hearing aid alone.*

Marvel technology has now been extended to these bimodal-hearing patients with the introduction of Phonak Sky Link Marvel and new Naida Link Marvel. Both the Sky Link Marvel and Naida Link Marvel can be worn together as hearing aids or be paired with an Advanced Bionics Sky CI Marvel or Naida CI Marvel sound processor. Because they are both based on Marvel technology, the cochlear implant sound processor and hearing aid are wirelessly connected and communicate with each other in a coordinated, dynamic way. Like their cochlear implant counterparts, both Sky Link Marvel and Naida Link Marvel also feature RogerDirect™, hands-free calls with own voice-pickup, and directly connect to iOS, Android or other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

“This is one of the most important and impressive product launches Advanced Bionics has ever had. Building on the wildly successful Phonak Marvel platform, Naída CI Marvel, Sky CI Marvel, and Target CI are going to be game changers for the cochlear implant industry, revolutionizing the way our wearers can expect to hear with their cochlear implant systems, and the way their hearing care providers fit them,” stated Victoria E. Carr-Brendel, Ph.D., GVP, Sonova Group and President of Advanced Bionics.

“The relationship between Phonak and Advanced Bionics is more than just a collaboration – it’s truly a partnership among two sister brands that share Sonova’s vision of a world where everyone enjoys the delight of hearing and lives a life without limitations,” added Sandy Brandmeier, President of Sonova USA’s Wholesale Hearing Instruments division. “Marvel was Phonak’s most successful product launch in history and we couldn’t be prouder to offer that technology to bimodal wearers as well as those preparing for cochlear implants with Naida Link Marvel and Sky Link Marvel.”

Target CI Marvel is designed to offer hearing care professionals easier, faster, and smarter fittings.

Target CI offers hearing care professionals easier fittings with the industry-standard Noahlink Wireless, giving them and their patients the freedom and convenience of cable-free programming. For the first time ever, professionals can program a cochlear implant and the associated bimodal hearing aid with one software in one fitting session. Its intuitive workflow, and user-centric design and features are made for faster fittings, allowing professionals to spend more time with their patients, rather than the software. Target CI is also designed to be a smarter fitting tool, with default settings optimized for cochlear implant patients, giving professionals the flexibility to meet their patient-specific needs.

“My hearing aid research studies have shown that AutoSense technology provides significant improvement in hearing in many challenging real world listening situations. I’m pleased to see this kind of innovation available in the Marvel CI to allow adult and pediatric CI patients to connect with the world around them more easily than ever before. Target CI’s integration with the Noah software system and Noahlink Wireless will also add a great deal of efficiency for clinicians working with cochlear implants,” said Jace Wolfe, Ph.D., Chief of Audiology & Research, Hearts for Hearing.

Advanced Bionics awarded damages in patent infringement lawsuit

Stäfa (Switzerland), May 19, 2020 –Sonova Holding AG, a leading provider of hearing solutions, announces today that on May 18, 2020 the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has denied the petition by Cochlear Ltd. (Cochlear) for an en banc review of the Court’s earlier judgement, with which it affirmed a verdict in the patent infringement lawsuit by the Alfred E. Mann Foundation for Scientific Research (AMF) and Advanced Bionics LLC (AB) v. Cochlear. The court thereby ultimately confirmed the earlier judgement and that Cochlear willfully infringed two patents, and confirmed the awarded damages of USD 268 million, plus interest. As a co-plaintiff, AB is entitled to a share of the damages awarded, after deduction of certain costs for the proceedings. Sonova expects that the verdict will result in a one-time income of around CHF 100- 120 million in FY 2020/21. A motion by AMF and AB for pre-trial interest is still pending a ruling by the District Court.

The lawsuit concerned two patents owned by AMF related to technology for cochlear implants. The lawsuit was filed by AMF back in 2007. AB exclusively licensed the two patents from AMF and for that reason was brought in at a later date as a necessary party. The patents in question have since expired.

Voluntary Field Corrective Action of HiRes Ultra and Ultra 3D

Valencia, CA, February 20, 2020 – Advanced Bionics (AB), a global leader in developing advanced cochlear implant systems, announced today that it has begun notifying regulatory authorities that it will voluntarily initiate a field corrective action related to the initial version of HiRes Ultra and Ultra 3D cochlear implant devices due to a decrease in performance experienced by a small percentage of recipients.

AB’s priority is to ensure that all cochlear implant recipients and health care providers have the information they need to understand this situation and that they receive the necessary support. Existing recipients of HiRes Ultra and Ultra 3D may continue to use their device as normal. If recipients experience issues of hearing degradation they should visit their audiologist or other health care provider. In addition, we will begin the notification process for device recipients worldwide, where allowed, to make them aware of the potential issue.

This voluntary action is being taken in an abundance of caution in response to recent increases in Ultra device explants related to low impedances and reports of hearing performance degradation. As of February 11, 2020, of the more than 16,000 recipients of these implants, less than 0.5% have been explanted for this reason. Please note that this device-related issue may manifest in performance degradation that could require revision surgery. The only potential for patient harm are the risks associated with a surgery.

AB has identified factors that contribute to the clinical symptoms leading to explant and hearing performance degradation. This information will be provided to health care professionals and recipients in geographies that allow. As of February 11th, in the small number of cases that have been explanted, fluid ingress at the electrode has occurred leading to interruption of stimulation. The hermetic seal of the implant case has been shown to be intact.

In our efforts to continually improve our products and in response to early reports of this issue AB has developed several improvements to the device to address the issue (new version). AB has received regulatory approval from the FDA in the US and TÜV SÜD in Europe for these improvements. AB is in the process of submitting these improvements to additional global regulatory agencies. AB plans to distribute products in these geographies as soon as approvals are obtained. AB will continue to distribute the HiRes 90K Advantage cochlear implant as well as the new version of HiRes Ultra and Ultra 3D based on market availability.

Previous generations of AB cochlear implants and external sound processors and accessories are not included in the scope of this voluntary field action.

AB’s primary concern is the safety and hearing performance of our recipients as well as the reliability of our products. AB continues to take all necessary corrective and preventative efforts to address this unforeseen occurrence.

Advanced Bionics Launches Active Insertion Monitoring (AIM) System: an innovative monitoring solution for implant surgery and post-op

Valencia, CA, July 10, 2019 – Advanced Bionics (AB) unveils its latest powerful innovation, the AIM™ System, at CI2019, the 16th Symposium on Cochlear Implants in Children in Hollywood, Florida. AIM stands for Active Insertion Monitoring, and is designed to be an invaluable tool for surgeons and hearing care professionals working with cochlear implant patients.

Real-time ECochG monitoring during electrode insertion

The challenge with CI surgery today is that surgeons have no objective means of monitoring the function of the cochlea during electrode insertion. The AIM system addresses this issue by using the implant to record ECochG, a proven1 measure of cochlear health, during insertion. ECochG, or electrocochleography, is a technique for recording potentials generated by the inner ear and the auditory nerve in response to acoustic stimulation. Utilizing the advanced measurement capabilities of the AB implant technology, AIM is able to measure ECochG potentials in real-time and provide feedback to the surgeon during electrode insertion.

Objective audiometry and other measurements without patient collaboration

The AIM system continues to offer benefits after the surgery. It can be used to perform objective audiometry from 250 Hz to 4000 Hz quickly and reliably without patient collaboration, making it especially convenient when working with younger and harder-to-test patients. In addition to audiometry, the AIM system can also perform a suite of objective measures including NRI, ESRT, and electrode impedances. All of these tests can be performed quickly and automatically with the click of a button.

Fast, objective, convenient

For all its versatile functionality, AIM is easy to use with its modern and intuitive user interface. After testing, patient data and results can be exported easily, and a full PDF report is generated automatically. In other words, the AIM system is fast, objective, and convenient.

“We’re very excited about the introduction of the AIM system because we believe that this is an important innovation for CI surgery. Surgeons and audiologists want the best outcomes for their patients, and AIM can be a means for them to achieve that. It is another testament to AB’s commitment not only to our CI wearers, but also to the hearing health professionals who care for them,” stated Victoria E. Carr-Brendel, Ph.D., GVP, Sonova Group and President of Advanced Bionics.

“We are proud and grateful to receive this prestigious award for the Best Overall Medical Device Solution,” says Victoria Carr-Brendel, PhD, Group Vice President Cochlear Implants (CI), Sonova. “It is a resounding recognition of the ingenuity and hard work of the people at Advanced Bionics over the last years. The new magnet technology in our Ultra 3D implants is improving the quality of life for many of our CI wearers, making MRI scans a hassle-free and pain-free experience.”

The innovative Ultra 3D multi-magnet assembly is capable of aligning with the magnetic field of the MRI scanner irrespective of patient orientation or movement. This allows adult and pediatric cochlear implant wearers to safely undergo high-resolution imaging, such as 3.0 Tesla MRIs, without surgery or head bandaging, without feeling pain or discomfort, and without restrictions to the orientation of the head during the MRI procedure.

MRI examinations are becoming increasingly commonplace as a diagnostic tool for a wide variety of medical conditions. Prior to the development of MRI-compatible CI magnet technology, wearers and healthcare professionals had to contend with the magnetic field from MRI machines exerting force on the CI magnet inside the head, causing torque and subsequent pain. Although these problems were managed to some extent using head bandaging and/or careful alignment of the MRI field with respect to the CI, it was common practice to remove magnets for high resolution MRI examinations, requiring out-patient surgery and interrupting the patient’s hearing during the process.

With the HiRes Ultra 3D, AB developed new multi-magnet technology that is compatible with MRI scans, giving CI wearers the peace of mind for any current and future health issues that may necessitate an MRI examination. Furthermore, the multi-magnet assembly is designed to withstand repeated exposure to MRI procedures without any loss of magnetic strength or mobility of the magnet assembly components.

AB Introduces Hassle Free MRI Cochlear Implant Technology

Advanced Bionics (AB) Announces the TUV Approval of the HiRes™ Ultra 3D Cochlear Implant. Built on the HiRes™ Ultra platform and developed by the Research and Development Team at AB, the new implant is the Hassle Free and Pain Free choice for recipients undergoing MRI examinations. Even for high resolution MRI examinations there is no need to remove the magnet and no requirement for head bandaging, meaning uninterrupted hearing for the patient.

Valencia, CA, November 6, 2018, – Advanced Bionics (AB) Announces the TUV Approval of the HiRes™ Ultra 3D Cochlear Implant.

Hansjuerg Emch, Group Vice President Cochlear Implants (CI), Sonova, says “After many years of research and development, the new magnet technology in our cochlear implants will improve the quality of life for our many recipients due to our hassle free and pain free magnet. We are leading the way and ensuring recipients have the best possible experiences with our advanced technology. It’s a powerful innovation and makes our efforts so rewarding.”

The new magnet design provides alignment with an external 3D magnetic field. This allows cochlear implant recipients to move freely around in the strong magnetic field of an MRI machine without feeling pain or discomfort, and without restrictions to the orientation of the head. This unique magnet is composed of four rotatable magnet rods encased in a revolving disc that allows the magnet to provide alignment with the MRI field in all three dimensions.

Previously, patients and surgeons have had to contend with the strong magnetic field from MRI machines exerting force on the magnet, causing torque and subsequent pain if the magnet remains in situ, even with head bandaging. It is common to remove the magnet for high resolution MRI examinations, requiring surgery and interrupting the patient’s hearing during the healing process.

MRI examinations are already standard of care for health care professionals and with this in mind AB developed a new magnet technology that is compatible with MRI examinations, allowing patients’ peace of mind, for any future health issues that necessitate an MRI examination. With the future in mind the new technology has been designed to undergo heavy usage of MRI procedures without any loss of magnetic strength or mobility of the magnet components.

Groundbreaking Microphone Technology to be launched by Phonak and Advanced Bionics

Phonak and Advanced Bionics today announce a breakthrough in new microphone technology, that will help people with hearing aids and cochlear implants hear better especially in noise. The invention is called MultiBeam Technology, which soon will be applied in new advanced wireless microphones. First scientific results with patients show large improvements in speech recognition.

Stäfa (Switzerland) and Valencia (USA), 6. February 2018 - Phonak and Advanced Bionics today announce a breakthrough in new microphone technology, that will help people with hearing aids and cochlear implants hear better especially in noise. The invention is called MultiBeam Technology, which soon will be applied in new advanced wireless microphones. First scientific results with patients show large improvements in speech recognition.

People with hearing loss use hearing aids or cochlear implants to hear better. Despite huge advancements in these devices, fundamental barriers remain in noisy restaurants, large business meetings or social gatherings, all acoustically challenging environments. There, 31%1 of people with hearing aids still have difficulties following conversations. This can lead to social retreat with further health implications.

Since September 2009 a highly specialized task force of more than 10 digital signal processing and acoustic engineers have been working on the development of MultiBeam Technology. By utilizing multiple microphones in six directions, speech from 360 degrees is calculated and compared. The direction with the best signal-to-noise ratio is automatically selected. The technological processing complexity is almost ten times higher than the previous technology generation from Phonak, and the power consumption was reduced by more than one third at the same time.

In a scientific investigation at the University of Texas in Dallas a group of 10 patients with hearing aids were tested in a situation which resembled a noisy restaurant or very noisy meeting with three conversation partners (see Figure 1). Speech understanding improves up to 61% in this group conversation in 75 dBA of noise compared to using hearing aids alone.2 Professor Linda Thibodeau, from the University of Texas in Dallas who led the research, says: “The Multibeam Technology will allow persons with hearing challenges who have resigned from attending social functions, family gatherings and business meetings to experience significant improvements in speech recognition. This could ultimately lead to improved quality of life as they confidently reconnect with others using discreet, convenient and highly versatile technology.”

Hans Mülder, senior audiologist and director marketing at Phonak says: “We are extremely happy to have achieved this milestone. It underlines the unwavering commitment of our finest engineers to never be satisfied with existing solutions but to continue to push the envelope of technology, so that more people can enjoy  their lives to the fullest. We are now working hard to embed the new technology in coming solutions.”

Hear the future: Gemeinsam für besseres Hören

"Hear the Future" ist das Thema des World Hearing Day 2018.

00:54

Am World Hearing Day zum Thema "Hear the Future" am 3.

Hear the Future: Together for Better Hearing

“Hear the Future” is the theme of World Hearing Day 2018. The WHO calls on everybody to take action to prevent and treat hearing loss. For over 10 years Sonova’s Hear the World Foundation has enabled people in need with hearing loss to hear better. Help us support this important cause.

00:54

An estimated 1.1 billion people worldwide are affected by hearing loss - 32 million of them are children. Most of these children live in low- and middle-income countries and have no access to audiological care. Just one in forty children with hearing loss wear a hearing aid.

WHO calls for action

On March 3, for World Hearing Day 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) will draw attention towards the rise in the number of people with hearing loss across the world with the theme “Hear the future”. The WHO calls on everybody to take action to stem the increase of hearing loss through preventive efforts and to help ensure that people with hearing loss have access to rehabilitation and hearing solutions.

The consequences of an untreated hearing loss can be serious: People who do not hear, cannot learn to speak. This could cause difficulties at school and in their work life and the chances of a life without limitations are low. On top of this, untreated hearing loss costs the global economy USD $750 billion every year (Source: WHO).

Prevention and sustainable treatment since 2006

The Hear the World Foundation – an initiative of Sonova, the leading provider of hearing solutions, is supporting people in need with hearing loss all around the world for over 10 years. Since its establishment, the foundation has supported over 80 aid projects enabling people in need to (better) hear. The foundation donated funding, the latest hearing technology by Phonak, Unitron, Hansaton, Advanced Bionics as well as expertise of a pool of over 14’000 Sonova employees from around the world. As volunteers, employees share their knowledge with local project staff on-site in the projects and thus provide valuable help for self-help.

Support us: Every donation and every social share counts

Participation is everything: Make a statement on World Hearing Day and donate in favor of a person in need, a child in need with hearing loss. You can also help spreading the word by sharing our messages on social media. With each post, share or like we draw even more people's attention to the important issue.
