What Every CI Candidate Should Know about Cochlear Implants and MRI Examinations

At Advanced Bionics, we want you to have complete peace of mind while using your cochlear implant. That means having a hassle free daily routine and uninterrupted access to hearing no matter what happens.

An MRI may not be the first thing you think of when you consider a cochlear implant but it's highly likely that you will need a MRI sometime in your life.

The HiRes Ultra 3D is MRI compatible and can be safely used in a MRI without any additional procedures. Since it’s designed to be compatible with the MRI’s magnetic field, you will have no pain or discomfort during the procedure. And most importantly, you'll never have to interrupt your access to hearing because you need to get an MRI. Cochlear implants that don't have the multi-magnet assembly may require you to go through two additional surgeries in order to get a MRI--one surgery to remove the magnet before the MRI and one surgery to place the magnet back inside afterwards. With these implants, it may be a while before you can use your sound processor again. After the second surgery, it may be a while before you can use your sound processor again.

With a cochlear implant, you should have better access to hearing and less hassle in your life—that’s why you should choose the HiRes Ultra 3D. Hassle free and pain free, providing you with access to uninterrupted hearing.

Saiesh’s Story

Saiesh was already responding to sounds just one month after his cochlear implant activation. But Saiesh had an intracranial cyst and had an MRI coming up. Normally, for a person with a cochlear implant, that means surgery in order to get the magnet inside the implant removed. And worse, the multi-magnet assembly can’t be reinserted until the surgical wound is healed—meaning that the user potentially loses access to their CI for a while. This wasn’t an option for Saiesh—his hearing and language development had already gotten off to such a good start and it didn’t make sense to interrupt it now.

Saiesh's surgeon, Dr. Andy Sipp of Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat of Atlanta (PENTA) had been one of the first to conduct an MRI on a child with the HiRes Ultra 3D implant. He worked with the MRI team and ensured that the MRI proceeded without a multi-magnet assembly removal surgery.

After the MRI, Saiesh had his hearing back with the Naida CI Q90 speech right away.  To the parents’ relief, there was no cause for alarm but they were told  that Saiesh would need consistent monitoring with future MRIs.  With AB’s Ultra 3D, Saiesh is ready for a lifetime of good health and good hearing.

“In the case that a child needs an MRI, now or in the future, we don’t have to sacrifice their early access to sound. We can start their hearing journey during a pivotal language learning time while still keeping other medical needs in mind.”
– Kelley Dwyer, AuD. Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat of Atlanta
