What is a Cochlear Implant and How Does It Work?

A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that helps people with severe hearing loss hear more clearly.

Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, a hearing implant sends sound waves directly to your nerves.

It’s designed to help you understand speech more clearly, especially in noisy places, and reconnect with the sounds that matter most.

Looking back, I wish I had done this a lot sooner.

I have no regrets in having this surgery. I am looking forward to having my right ear implanted, too, so I can hear with both ears. If you are out there and you have hearing loss that is progressing beyond the help of hearing aids, let me tell you that you don't have to suffer anymore. Make an appointment with your audiologist and see if you qualify for a cochlear implant."

"It was like I plugged my headphones all the way in and the world came back in stereo.

We have a lot of plans for the future, and now I don't have to worry about not being able to hear what she has to say to me."

FAQ

Common Questions About Cochlear Hearing Implants

A cochlear implant (CI), sometimes referred to as a hearing implant, is considered the next step in hearing technology when hearing aids are no longer providing the sound or support someone needs. Hearing aids go on the outside of the body and work like a speaker, making sound louder. Cochlear implants go under the skin and send sound waves directly to your hearing nerve for clearer understanding.

Yes. Cochlear implants are extremely safe. They’ve been used for decades and have helped hundreds of thousands of people around the world hear again and reconnect with life.

You’ll start hearing with your cochlear implant after your audiologist turns it on—usually two to four weeks after surgery. You’ll hear sounds right away, but your brain needs time to adjust, just like getting used to new glasses. Understanding speech and the sounds around you will usually improve gradually over the next few months, with most people noticing progress in about three months.

Cochlear implants are often covered by Medicare and many private insurance plans. Your exact coverage and any out-of-pocket costs depend on your insurance. For details, contact the Advanced Bionics insurance support team

Yes. You can use a hearing aid on your other ear with your Advanced Bionics cochlear implant. This is called a bimodal solution.

Together with our sister company Phonak, a leader in hearing aids, only Advanced Bionics offers a linked and synced bimodal solution. Working together as an integrated system, the two devices can help you hear better in noise and can be adjusted with a single control. You can even stream the same audio to both ears.
