Considering a cochlear implant? Call 1-800-693-0706

My Journey from Hearing Aids to Cochlear Implants

Monday, March 17, 2025

When Sue’s hearing aids weren’t enough to allow her to live her most fulfilling life, she began to research the benefits of cochlear implants. After seeking multiple opinions, she decided to get Advanced Bionics (AB) cochlear implants, which came with a supportive team and the ability to use Remote Programming.

My Progressive Hearing Loss: A Family Affair

Growing up in a large family filled with strong, inspiring women, I felt surrounded by love and support. My four sisters, my mother and her two sisters, my grandmother and her several sisters, and countless other female relatives were pillars of my life. However, one consistent thread throughout those women in the family was hearing loss. As they all aged into their 50s, their hearing started to deteriorate. As I got older, I knew it was likely I would inherit this condition too.

At age 51, I started wearing hearing aids. Over the next 28 years, I purchased seven different pairs of hearing aids, always striving to stay up to date with the latest technology. In my commercial real estate career, hearing well was critical for successful negotiations. But as the years went by, even the best hearing aids didn’t provide the clarity I needed—especially in one-on-one conversations. I required every extra device possible. I tried a Phonak TV Connecter, a ConnectClip microphone, a Roger On™, and a portable hearing loop to hear well enough to converse.

I am very sociable and engaged in a variety of activities and desperately wanted a way to hear better.

Discovering Cochlear Implants

Two years ago—noticing that even the best hearing aids were no longer enough—I began to research the benefits of cochlear implants. A good friend of mine had been implanted a couple of years earlier, and I followed his journey closely. I began to notice people who had cochlear implants and asked them about their experiences. This led me to speak with my audiologist about exploring cochlear implants as a solution.

Initially, my audiologist encouraged me to make adjustments to my hearing aids to see if that would help, but it did not. I knew I needed to do something else, and I felt a cochlear implant was the answer.

After a lot of research, I contacted Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland for a cochlear implant evaluation. I live in Eugene, about two hours away, and wanted to make sure I got the best care I could find. In July 2023, I went to OHSU for a full day of testing, including a CT scan and MRI. I also talked with specialists about getting an Advanced Bionics cochlear implant.

I chose AB for several reasons. I already owned a Roger On and had a Roger X receiver that connected with my hearing aids and appreciated that they would be compatible with my AB cochlear implant (CI). I have a good friend whose wife uses an AB CI, and they were very supportive of the company. I also appreciated the built-in capacity in the CI, which could support future technology upgrades and the ability to stream into both ears, which AB technology seamlessly provides.

By the end of the day, I had signed off on surgery to receive a cochlear implant in my left ear. I was thrilled!

My speech comprehension jumped from 8-12% to 93%! My friends and family were astonished at the difference. I was relieved and inspired.

Cochlear Implant Remote Programming

Since I live far from my audiologist, I was very happy to learn about Remote Programming. After a recent in-person visit, I felt the settings weren’t quite right, so I texted my audiologist, and we did a remote adjustment. It was very easy and worked just as well as an in-person visit.

Remote Programing gives me all the same benefits I receive when meeting in-person, and it saves me from having to spend hours on the road. Moving forward, I plan to split my visits—some in person and some remotely. The only thing that can’t be done remotely is the soundproof booth testing, which is still required for certain evaluations.

Working through Challenges

I’m currently working with my audiologist and the team at AB to address an unexpected sensitivity to high-frequency sounds. This sensitivity has led to some adjustments, and we have disabled some electrodes temporarily. I will undergo a CT scan later this month to determine if further adjustments are needed. But even with this minor setback, I remain optimistic.

I know what is possible because I had such good results initially, so if revision or repositioning of the implant is required, I am ready on a moment’s notice to have this done.  Having the implant has changed my life in ways I never thought possible while wearing hearing aids.

Advanced Bionics’ Support Team Makes All the Difference

The support I’ve received from Advanced Bionics has been amazing. From my first visit to my Remote Programming sessions, every step of this journey has felt comfortable and reassuring. Even if I need more adjustments in the future, I know I’m in good hands.

I am incredibly grateful for my AB cochlear implant and the remarkable technology it has brought into my life. It has restored my ability to hear clearly and effortlessly, and the option of cochlear implant Remote Programming has made this transition even smoother. I’m grateful that I sought a second opinion when my local audiologist was reluctant to recommend cochlear implants. Getting a second opinion about my hearing technology was what I needed and deserved.

If you’re someone who has been living with hearing loss and is considering a cochlear implant, I highly recommend exploring all the options available.

Even if there aren’t cochlear implant centers and clinics near where you live, know that technology like cochlear implant Remote Programming still makes it possible for you to benefit from this technology. So don’t let that deter you from exploring whether cochlear implants can change your life too!
